What You Should Know Before Ordering
The information below can help you enhance your stainless steel purchasing requirements. These are common questions often asked by our customers, so please take a careful look.
Why does stainless steel have thickness tolerance?
Stainless steel has thickness tolerance due to various factors involved in the manufacturing process. These factors include the raw material variation, the rolling process, and the equipment used. Additionally, temperature fluctuations, uneven cooling, and other factors can also contribute to thickness variations.
To ensure that users have some flexibility in practical applications and to prevent any issues arising from minor differences in thickness, manufacturers establish predetermined thickness tolerance ranges. As long as the thickness of stainless steel falls within this range, it is considered to meet the product quality standards.
In the Chinese market, the most common thickness tolerances are -/+0.03mm and -/+0.05mm.
AOD material and IOD/Induction material.
In China, 201/J3 narrow stainless steel is divided into two types: refined furnace (AOD) material and induction furnace material. Refined furnace material is mainly produced through alloy smelting, and during the refining process, harmful elements and gases are effectively removed from the molten steel using methods such as oxygen blowing and argon blowing. This reduces impurities and improves the purity and quality of the steel. On the other hand, induction furnace (IOD) material is mainly produced by melting scrap in an induction furnace without further refining or purification.
As a result, stainless steel produced in refined furnaces has better uniformity and stability in terms of chemical composition. However, induction furnace material is more competitively priced. The choice between the two can be made based on your product requirements.
Types of 201 stainless steel.
With the development of time in China, 201 stainless steel has evolved into different varieties, including J4, J1, J3, J2, J5, and even J7. The chemical composition and mechanical processing properties vary among these variations. Therefore, when you intend to purchase 201 stainless steel, it is best to specify whether it is 201/J4, 201/J1, or 201/J3 to the supplier. For differences in elemental composition, please refer to the table provided above.
What you purchased may not be genuine 304.
Due to market competition, steel mills have introduced stainless steel materials such as 304D, 304ZG, and 30478 with nickel content below 8% and chrome content below 18% to reduce costs. Although they are produced by the same steel mill, their prices can vary by 100-200 USD/ton. If you are not aware of these details and only focus on price, you may be deceived.
